Poland vulnerable
This morning my country's President and his wife died in a plane crash. (read more from Reuters here)
My initial reaction was shock. I'm still shocked. The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, has declared the next week as the week of mourning. There is nothing else on the Polish media, just further reports from the country and from Russia, inquiry into the crash has been launched, condolences flow in from leaders of other European countries, the states, NATO.
While everyone is busy with this, I can't help but to be scared for my country. I didn't get to hear the full story until the late afternoon - and the more I hear the grimmer the situation sounds. There were 96 (or 97?) people on this plane, including but not limited to Head of National Bank of Poland, Deputy Culture, Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministers, Head of National Security Office, Chief of Staff, Head of Army Chief of Staff, Head of Land Forces and Head of Navy, several MP's and senators.
Acting president has stepped in and has already called for a presidential election. He now must choose the head of National Bank of Poland and soon after new senators and MP's must be sworn in. Nobody mentions anything about the heads of the military and the Ministers we lost - and that worries me very very much.
I don't want to sound cold. People died. Some of them more important than others. But if - for just a split second - we think of what would happen if we were attacked right now, we must be scared.
The entire government is out of balance, the armed forces headless and country leaderless. We are a sitting duck.
